Pilot has been gone for quite some time now circling the globe as most of his species does.
Our energetic mascot did however send us some information which he wanted posted in his own webpage.
“Hello! I am Pilot the Arctic Tern, pronounced in scientific terms Sterna paradisaea.
I am a relatively small bird but one of the most determined.
I really like to fly...a lot!
Every year, I flap my wings over 22,000 miles!
For my buddies on the metric system, that's only 35,000 kilometers.
The distance that I migrate is the longest of any bird.
I even get all the way around the world twice a year.
That's only if I flew a straight line though.
But, like any good traveller, I like to take a lot of excursions.
In fact we arctic terns almost never land and are known to be in daylight more than dark because of our busy migration schedule.
I guess you could call me the ultimate frequent flyer.
"Your aircrafts' flight patterns often mimic my own to get across that big ocean you guys call The Atlantic.
From up here though, it looks like a little pond to me.
I take this airway called 'The Jetstream' which makes my wings very thankful.
So when you're flying on over to Europe, keep an eye out for me and wave hello!
I'll try to wave back, but my wings are often pretty busy."
